PBI Concludes Review into Potential Orb Technology Compromise
Strategic Initiatives · Internal Review · 15 July 2025
A public Orb-related release prompted an internal review into potential information leakage, external duplication and the possibility of unauthorised access to earlier PBI discussions.

Initial Signal Detection
Orb Technology had existed within PBI discussion before July 2025, but remained loosely defined and largely conceptual.
The subject first surfaced during the 2024 year-end function, where it received limited formal treatment and was regarded as an interesting but unresolved area of future potential.
That changed on 15 July 2025, when Discord publicly introduced Discord Orbs.
The overlap in terminology immediately prompted concern within the Executive Committee. While no formal intellectual property position had been established, the appearance of a similarly named external development raised questions regarding information leakage, coincidence and the possibility that earlier internal discussions had travelled further than intended.

Immediate Executive Response
The initial response was rapid and, by internal standards, proportionate.
Questions were raised regarding legal exposure, possible contact with external counsel and whether a member of the group had inadvertently or deliberately disclosed information.
The possibility of a mole was raised.
Human Resources subsequently referenced the PBI Handbook provisions on corporate espionage, while Business Development drew attention to recent external conversations that were, at minimum, considered suspicious enough to warrant discussion.
The matter quickly acquired an unofficial internal label:
Orbgate

Internal Escalation
By the following day, discussion had progressed from speculation to formal internal review language.
The Executive Committee considered whether earlier Orb-related discussions had been externally compromised, whether any unauthorised disclosure could be substantiated and whether the similarity between PBI’s internal terminology and Discord’s public launch represented anything more than coincidence.
A draft legal response was discussed.
Executive leadership also called for a united internal position while discouraging further finger-pointing.
Despite the seriousness of the language used, no evidence of deliberate disclosure was identified.
The review found no basis to conclude that Discord had obtained, replicated or otherwise acted on confidential PBI information.

Strategic Consequence
The investigation nevertheless produced an unintended strategic outcome.
What had previously existed as a largely informal concept was elevated into a recognised PBI Strategic Initiative.
The Executive Committee concluded that even in the absence of evidence of compromise, the repeated appearance of Orb-related concepts beyond internal channels justified more structured observation.
Orb Technology was therefore moved from casual discussion into a more defined position within PBI’s portfolio of emerging interests.
At this stage, the company did not attempt to define Orb Technology publicly.
That position has largely been maintained.
“At this stage, Orb Technology remains undefined, but no longer ignorable.”
Subsequent Orb-Related Activity
The matter did not end with the July 2025 review.
On 2 May 2026, further Orb-related references were documented across unrelated contexts.
These included:
- a digital environment explicitly referencing “Orb technology”
- generated conceptual material associating Orb Technology with central intelligence, connectivity and systems coordination
- additional physical Orb sightings
- continued Executive Committee discussion

Taken together, these references were considered sufficient to keep the matter under observation, though not sufficient to explain it.

Orb Incident
Reflective Object
A subsequent physical Orb sighting was documented independently of the original Orbgate review.
The object displayed no confirmed functional relationship to PBI’s existing Orb Technology discussions, but was retained within the internal record due to its obvious morphological relevance.

Current Position
PBI does not claim that these events are connected.
Nor does the company claim that Discord’s use of Orbs resulted from any breach of PBI information.
The internal review concluded that coincidence remained the most plausible explanation available.
The strategic effect, however, was significant.
Orb Technology moved from an informal concept into a recognised area of ongoing interest, and later observations have only strengthened the case for keeping it under review.
The company has not publicly defined:
- what Orb Technology ultimately is
- what commercial applications it may support
- whether it is a product, platform, category or broader system
- why several members of the Executive Committee remain convinced that it matters
Those questions remain open.
“PBI does not claim to understand Orb Technology fully. It does, however, intend to remain adjacent to it.”
